Drowning 溺れ - On the verge of drowning | WS #2

ButohOUT! 2022
KABUKU-OFF

“We're all kind of weird and twisted and drowning.” — Author: Haruki Murakami

Ideal for both experienced practitioners and those new to Butoh, this workshop will explore the relationship of the body and space through a series of classical Butoh techniques. The participants will explore a deeper sensation of the body both physically and metaphorically, to expand their limit, embracing the sensation of ‘drowning’, as a positive metaphor of transformation.

Tatsumi Hijikata, one of the founders of Butoh associated the essence of Butoh with a real experience of nearly drowning in a river. While watching the surface of the water, he entered a liminal space between life and death and felt he was being reborn again and again.

Local Butoh practitioner and researcher Helen Smith will guide the workshop, as well as having special international guests from Japan, Seisaku (one of the last disciples of atsumi Hijikata) and Dai Matsuoka (a member of Sankaijuku) via Zoom, supported and translated by Yumi Umiuare.

The workshop on 5th and 6th will be conducted at Abbotsford Convent (in-person) while Dai Matstuoka and Seisaku will give a 2 hour workshop each from Japan.
