Over the 6 sessions, Yumi introduces various exercises and philosophies of Butoh, incorporating diverse aspects of ritual. Utilising gestures, words, and objects, the participants are guided to find their own 'gateway’ for entering new territories- from formal to informal, domestic to surreal, and sacred to profane. They are also guided to create their own unique ritual/sequence of movements to be able to access their deeper source of creativity.

Utilising the Zoom platform, this workshop also offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn from Yumi’s 30 years of experience, knowledge and wisdom as a Butoh dancer. You get to learn not only about the historical and global context of Butoh, but also how her Japanese Australian Butoh practices have been influenced, impacted and shaped by the landscape of the First Nations land, which we call Australia. 2020 - Primal Colour (cancelled)
This specialised weekly intensive will be facilitated by local legend Japanese-Australian Butoh dancer Yumi Umiumare. Participants will explore the fundamental method, discipline, philosophy and physical expression of Butoh as well as its core elements: ‘Being', ‘Spatiality’,’Abstraction' and Yumi’s unique embodiment of ‘Dramatic Nature.’

Over five weekly sessions participants will explore the fundamental method, discipline and philosophy of Butoh in order to explore their creative process. The workshop will promote explorations of various concepts including ‘Imagining,’ ‘Articulating’ and ‘Shaping’ while providing a platform for participants to create and develop their own work.
